Why was Maker Overnight Oats created?
Breakfast may be the most important meal but it doesn't get treated that way. That's because mornings are crazy. In our case, Jess has two young kids and Barry stays up too late. We’re not alone. Too many people skip breakfast or grab an "energy" bar. We wondered why isn’t there an easy, delicious, nutritious, and portable option? Why not make it organic, no added sugar, and vegan* too! We created Maker Oats to help us (and you) start the day right. No cooking, no clean up, even take the jar on-the-go. Maker makes your breakfast.
Why Overnight Oats?
Old-fashioned oatmeal is great, but who always has the time to cook it? Maker Overnight Oats solves the breakfast conundrum. We combine thick-cut organic oats with unusual fruits (mulberries, golden berries) and sophisticated pairings (freeze-dried bananas and real coffee). We make it foolproof so that you can make it in no time. Just add your favorite milk or nut milk, stir, and soak overnight in the fridge. Enjoy cold in the morning, at-home or on-the-go. Then go to sleep knowing that a nutritious breakfast awaits. It's organic, no sugar added, and no compromise.
What flavors do you have?

Is there caffeine in the Banana & Coffee flavor?
Yes, it is made with real coffee and hence contains caffeine. There's 42mg of caffeine per serving, which is about what a half cup of coffee provides. And there’s real banana, too.

Who are Jess and Barry?
Jess Price is a food Impresario. She particularly excited to be starting something from scratch. In her years at Snapple and Quaker, she helped good brands become even better by providing consumers with more nutritious solutions. Her work included the development of premium chicken sausages, the launch of white teas and the writing of a nutrition philosophy around the goodness of oats and breakfast. She has a passion for developing marketing strategies, launching new products, managing day-to-day business operations, elevating brands at retail, and turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. Yes, she really has two young kids—three if you count working with Barry. Her kids' favorite Maker Oats flavor is Apple & Coconut.
Barry Nalebuff teaches negotiation, innovation and game theory at Yale University where he is the Milton Steinbach Professor. In 1998, together with one of his students, Barry cofounded Honest Tea, a company that sells ready-to-drink iced tea. Barry is also the cofounder of Kombrewcha, a slightly alcoholic version of Kombucha. With the creation of Maker Oats, He has fulfilled his dream of becoming a cereal entrepreneur and bad pun artist. Although he is a tea guy, his favorite flavor of Maker Oats is the coffee. Go figure.
Who is the parent company for Maker Oats?
Inviting Foods is a place for experimenting inside The Quaker Oats Company. We think of ourselves as a food incubator or test kitchen at Quaker. Our goal is to bring an entrepreneurial approach to nutritious food while working with all the resources and reach of Quaker to ensure the highest production quality and make it widely accessible.
Is the packaging recyclable?
The single serve pack is 100% recyclable. The carton is also recyclable but not the pouches. In order to protect the product from moisture, we need to use a plastic pouch. Even paper pouches that protect the product from air wouldn't be recyclable because we'd need to have a plastic liner.
Why don’t you save packaging by using one big pouch rather than five smaller ones?
We thought about that. The challenge is that the coffee, spices, and chia seeds tend to settle at the bottom and so the mixture won’t be right (unless you really shake it every time). This way, we can ensure that you get the right recipe every time. And it makes it extra convenient to bring a pouch with you to work or when you're on the road.
For the glass jar, is the lid BPA free?
Is there a limit to the number of uses of the jar?
Only by your imagination. More seriously, the jar is made of glass and the lid of steel so there is no limit to how many times you can wash and reuse the jar. Indeed, we think of it as a family heirloom.
How do you make Maker Overnight Oats?
Pour in your favorite milk to cover the oats. Wait until the bubbles stop and then pour in a little more to make sure they're all covered, about 2/3–3/4 of a cup should do it. You really can't go wrong: soy milk, nut milk (we're especially keen on almond and macadamia nut), good ol' dairy milk, and even water all work.
Stir or put the lid on and give it a shake and let it soak overnight in the fridge. The next morning, you're good to go. We think it's best enjoyed cold, but there are no rules. Add granola, yogurt, kefir, fresh fruit… Overnight oats are best to eat within 24 hours after soaking.
What kind of milk should I use?
You really can't go wrong: soy milk, nut milk (we're especially keen on almond and macadamia nut), good ol' dairy milk, and even water will work. Watch our What do I add to the Maker Jar video for more ideas.
Can I eat it warm?
Sure—but can you please first try it cold. To enjoy it warm, microwave uncovered for 30 seconds after cold steeping overnight in the fridge. Remember, take the lid off before microwaving. And, be careful, the jar may be hot.
What if you forget to add the milk the night before?
No problem. Pour the oats in a microwave safe bowl, add milk, microwave for 2–3 minutes, and enjoy right away. You might even prefer it that way.
How long do I need to refrigerate it?
A couple of hours is fine, but it's best if you let it soak overnight.
Can I add yogurt? When do I add the yogurt (before or after soaking the oats overnight?)
Add granola, yogurt, kefir, fresh fruit… you can do it the night before or top it off in the morning.
Can I make it with yogurt only (without milk)?
Yes, though it will be a bit thick.
Do I need to cook the oats?
No need to cook or heat the oats if they have soaked in the fridge overnight.
Who provides your organic certification?
The product is certified USDA organic by Quality Assurance International (QAI). QAI is a USDA-accredited organic product certifying agency.
Are the overnight oats Gluten Free?
All the ingredients in Maker Overnight Oats are inherently gluten free. But due to the harvesting and manufacturing process, stray gluten-containing grains may come into contact with the oats. Therefore we can't claim that all of our overnight oats that wind up on shelves are gluten-free.
Are there any nuts in the product?
The Apple & Coconut contains almond and coconut. The Banana & Coffee contains coconut. The Mulberry & Chia is nut free.
Does Maker Overnight Oats contain dairy?
The product contains no milk. No egg ingredients, either. It is vegan*.
Does Maker Overnight Oats contain soy?
No. The product contains no soy ingredients.
Is it certified Kosher?
Is it vegan*?
Yep, we define vegan as "a food that does not contain any ingredient or processing aid sourced from, produced or processed by animals." Maker Oats does not contain any poultry, fish, gelatin, milk, eggs, animal enzymes, or sugar refined with animal bone char. Note that we do not exclude ingredients that have been or may have been subject to animal testing.
